The United States has reiterated its stance against corruption, warning that individuals involved in corrupt activities—including prominent figures—may face visa restrictions under its global accountability measures.

Through the #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, the US Mission in Nigeria highlighted that the policy aims to discourage corruption and make the public aware of its consequences. Officials emphasized that even influential individuals found guilty of corruption could be denied entry to the United States, with the restrictions potentially extending to their immediate family members. This approach is part of Washington’s broader strategy to use immigration tools where legal avenues may be limited.

The policy targets offenses such as corruption, fraud, trafficking, and other acts that undermine governance. In past instances, similar visa bans have been applied to business executives tied to fentanyl trafficking and to individuals in Central America accused of supporting foreign influence operations.

The US Embassy in Nigeria stressed that the initiative aligns with America’s long-standing promotion of transparency and accountability. It also warned visa applicants that providing false information or engaging in illegal conduct could result in permanent ineligibility.

US officials noted that the measures are designed to safeguard national security while promoting integrity in international relations. The campaign underscores Washington’s continued engagement in Nigeria and worldwide, sending a clear signal that accountability extends beyond borders.
