The Abia State Police Command has refuted claims of its involvement in a civilian's death in Aba on Wednesday. The victim was an unidentified truck driver.
In a Thursday statement, Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka said their initial probe found no evidence supporting the theory that police officers mistook each other for IPOB members and exchanged fire. She confirmed a shooting occurred, resulting in a civilian casualty, but stated that the shooters' identities and motives were still under investigation. The police urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Reports suggest the incident involved a clash between police teams from Aba and Umuahia. Allegedly, these teams, operating in unmarked commercial buses, failed to recognize each other before opening fire. The gunfire caused panic among local shop owners and passersby.
The truck driver was reportedly caught in the crossfire and killed. After the incident, it's said that the officers involved argued and refused to take responsibility for the driver's death once they realized they were all police personnel.
