Tension gripped Igboukwu community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State after residents discovered a young man who had allegedly been chained and confined in a hut by his father for about five years.
The victim, identified as Chogbo, popularly called Agudo, and said to be in his mid-20s, was believed by many in the community to have travelled to Europe. However, during a search conducted by some youths on Saturday, he was found locked up in chains inside a small hut, where he had reportedly been kept since 2021.
An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, explained, “While passing near the hut, we heard strange noises. Out of curiosity, we searched the place and were shocked to find our brother tied with chains on both hands and legs. He told us he had been kept there since 2021. When we asked for the keys to free him, they had rusted and could no longer open the locks, so we had to break them forcefully. The man had not even had a proper bath for years. His father kept telling people he travelled abroad. This is inhumane.”
The rescued victim was immediately taken for medical treatment. A video of the discovery, which shows angry youths interrogating the father and rescuing the victim, has since gone viral on social media.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, Anambra State Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the young man has been rescued and is receiving the necessary care at a hospital. He added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had ordered a full investigation into the disturbing case to uncover the facts and ensure those found guilty are held accountable.
“The Commissioner commends the youths of the community for their proactive role in uncovering the incident, describing it as a clear demonstration of community partnership in policing,” Ikenga stated. He assured that further updates would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
