The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has endorsed a major amendment to its financial framework, effectively doubling the share of Bar Practising Fees (BPF) allocated to its branches.

Under the new arrangement, branches will now receive 10% of the total BPF collections, with half of that amount ring-fenced for financing Human Rights Committees at the branch level.

The reform, which required amendments to sections of the NBA Constitution on financial allocations, was among several proposals unanimously adopted by members during the Association’s Annual General Meeting.

Delegates said the decision addresses longstanding demands for stronger branch autonomy, increased grassroots funding, and enhanced institutional support for human rights advocacy nationwide.

The approval came at the 67th Annual General Conference (AGC), themed “Stand Out, Stand Tall.” The event convened thousands of lawyers, judges, and legal scholars from Nigeria and abroad, who deliberated on a wide range of pressing issues, including human rights, governance, access to justice, insecurity, gender inclusion, alternative dispute resolution, and the enforceability of socio-economic rights.
