Security operatives nab suspected vote buyer with N25.9m cash in Kaduna

Security operatives in Kaduna have arrested a man suspected of attempting to buy votes, seizing N25,963,000 from him just hours before Saturday’s bye-elections in parts of the state.

The suspect, Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was apprehended around 3:30 a.m. by the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the Department of State Services at a popular hotel on Turunku Road, Kaduna.

Preliminary investigations indicate the large sum of money was intended to bribe voters and compromise the election process. Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect confessed and pleaded for leniency.

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, emphasized that anyone caught attempting to undermine elections would face strict legal consequences. He warned that vote buying, thuggery, violence, or other illegal activities aimed at disrupting polls would not be tolerated.

The Police Command also cautioned political actors and their supporters against inciting violence, noting credible intelligence of plans to provoke unrest. Security personnel have been deployed to polling units, collation centres, and other strategic locations across the state.

“The Command will act decisively against anyone, regardless of status, involved in violence, intimidation, vote buying, or thuggery,” the police said. Residents were assured of adequate security before, during, and after the elections and encouraged to vote peacefully.
