Tinubu Encourages Nigerians Overseas to Play Role in National Development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to leverage their skills and resources in support of national development, declaring that the country is on an upward trajectory under his leadership.

Speaking on Thursday at the Kahala Hotel and Resort, Yokohama, Japan, during an interactive session with Nigerians living abroad on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), Tinubu underscored the need for shared responsibility between citizens at home and those abroad.

Addressing professionals and entrepreneurs from diverse fields, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for positive change. He pointed to reforms in passport processing, economic stabilization, healthcare, business competitiveness, investment promotion, and capital market growth.

Noting the return of many Nigerians from overseas, Tinubu urged others in the Diaspora to actively contribute to nation-building. “If you stay away, who will build it?” he asked, while encouraging them to serve as ambassadors of the country and project a positive image.

“Being a citizen is not just about carrying a passport,” he stressed. “It is about character, commitment, and collective responsibility. Without working together, we risk losing the future we are meant to lead.”

The event also featured contributions from Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, and NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, while Wale Tinubu, the President’s nephew, outlined reforms improving economic opportunities.

Leaders of the Nigerian community in Japan, led by Union President Emeka Ebogota, commended the President’s engagement and pledged their support for Nigeria’s transformation agenda.

Dignitaries at the event included Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake, Regional Development Minister Abubakar Momoh, Science and Technology Minister Uche Nnaji, Budget Minister Atiku Bagudu, Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite, DG of NIA Ambassador Mohammed, along with senior government officials and private sector leaders.
