FCT doctors embark on indefinite strike

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday declared an indefinite strike.

The decision was contained in a communique signed by ARD-FCT President, Dr. George Ebong, and General Secretary, Dr. Agbor Affiong, following an emergency general meeting on Sunday. This move comes after the expiration of a seven-day warning strike the association embarked on last week.

The ARD-FCTA, which represents doctors across 14 district and general hospitals as well as the Department of Public Health under the FCTA, said its members were left with no choice after months of unresolved negotiations.

According to the communique, Congress expressed frustration that none of its earlier demands had been addressed, describing the situation as proof of the government’s neglect of the healthcare system, which hampers doctors’ ability to deliver quality care.

The doctors’ demands include:

  • Payment of salary arrears ranging from one to six months for members employed since 2023.

  • Immediate recruitment of more staff.

  • Release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund.

  • Settlement of arrears from the 25–35% upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.

  • Timely completion of skipping and conversion processes for members.

  • Correction of irregular salary payments and erroneous deductions.

  • Conversion of post-Part II Fellows to Consultant cadre within six months of qualification.

  • Documented timelines for promotions with full arrears.

  • Payment of wage award arrears, outstanding hazard allowances, and salaries owed to newly employed external residents (three to four months’ arrears).

  • Renovation and proper equipping of FCTA hospitals.

After extensive deliberations, the association resolved that the strike would begin 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 15, 2025, and would continue until authorities show genuine commitment to addressing the outlined issues.

“We hope management urgently meets our demands in the interest of both patients and doctors,” the communique concluded.
