Federal University Lokoja’s Law Faculty Gets CLE Nod as Non-Compliant Schools Face Sanctions

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has granted provisional accreditation to the Federal University Lokoja in Kogi State, allowing the institution to launch a law degree program with an initial intake of 50 first-year students. This decision was part of CLE’s Accreditation and Facilities Verification Reports, approved at its third quarterly meeting on August 1, 2025, held at the Nigerian Law School Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, OFR, Life Bencher, reviewed reports from the Board of Studies, led by Director-General Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, Life Bencher. Other universities were given directives to improve facilities or address deficiencies: Salem University, Lokoja, must continue upgrading its law faculty, while Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, were asked to rectify shortcomings before reapplying for accreditation.

Sanctions were imposed on universities that admitted students without CLE approval: Glorious Vision University, Ogwa, Edo State, received a two-year moratorium, and Renaissance University, Ugbawka, Enugu State, received a one-year moratorium, as part of efforts to enforce strict compliance with legal education standards.

The CLE also approved the February 2024/2025 Bar Final Examination (Backlog) results for 5,674 candidates, which included 72 First Class (1.3%), 608 Second Class Upper (10.7%), 37% Second Class Lower, 29.1% Pass, 4% Conditional Pass, 17.5% Fail, and 0.4% Absent. Sanctions for exam misconduct and referred admissions were also endorsed.

Additionally, the council approved the Finance and General Purpose Committee’s reports, covering the Audited Financial Statements for 2020–2023 and Capital Projects for 2024/2025, demonstrating commitment to transparency and development in legal education.

Chief Emeka Ngige commended council members, management, and staff for their dedication to upholding high standards in Nigerian legal education. The decisions from the August 7, 2025 meeting, issued by Secretary to the Council A.O. Osho (Ms.), will guide universities and law schools nationwide in achieving excellence in legal training.
