President John Dramani Mahama has removed Ghana’s Chief Justice from office after a high-level probe confirmed allegations of falsifying court records and misappropriating public funds.
The decision followed the findings of a five-member commission, led by a Supreme Court judge and established by Mahama, which concluded that the accusations against the Chief Justice were credible and advised her dismissal.
“In reviewing the petition and supporting evidence, the Committee determined that acts of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been proven and therefore recommended her removal,” Presidential spokesperson Felix Ofosu said in a statement on Monday. “President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, dismissed the Chief Justice from office.”
This unprecedented move marks the first time a sitting Chief Justice in Ghana has been subjected to investigation and subsequently removed.
Although Mahama, who assumed office in January, has repeatedly vowed to strengthen the fight against corruption, it is still uncertain whether the ousted Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, will face criminal charges.
