A Nigerian national, identified as James and also known as Emmanuel Chukwunonso Samson, has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Special Court for Essential Commodities (EC) Act cases in Coimbatore, India, for his role in an international drug trafficking network uncovered by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

The case dates back to July 17, 2012, when NCB officials in Chennai intercepted three suspicious parcels at a courier office. Concealed within handbags, car gasket packaging, and embroidery materials, the parcels were meant for delivery to West Africa, Australia, and Spain. They were found to contain 1.195 kg of heroin and 200 gm of methaqualone — a sedative-hypnotic drug used to treat anxiety and insomnia — with an international street value of over ₹2 crore.

Investigations that followed led to James’ arrest in Erode, where authorities also seized four kilograms of ganja. On September 20, the Coimbatore court sentenced him to a decade of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh.

The NCB has urged the public to report drug-related activities via its helpline ‘MANAS’ (1933), assuring that informants’ identities will be kept confidential.
