Ukraine’s security can only be ensured through robust partnerships, Zelensky asserts at the UN.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed for more nations to join Ukraine’s security coalition and intensify pressure on Russia, stressing that his country must fight to safeguard its sovereignty.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, Zelenskyy criticized international institutions as too weak to prevent wars, insisting that true security depends on strong alliances, reliable partners, and sufficient weapons. He argued that international law alone is ineffective without the support of powerful allies and military strength, saying those who hold weapons ultimately decide survival.

“Ukrainians are peaceful, but they want to live freely in their independent country. That’s why we invest in defence. For many nations, there is no alternative,” he stated, citing conflicts in Sudan, Somalia, and Palestine as further proof of a global system incapable of stopping violence or delivering peace.

On Russia’s war in Ukraine, Zelenskyy highlighted the use of famine and chemical weapons as tools of aggression, the abduction of thousands of children, and repeated attacks near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which recently suffered another blackout. He also condemned Russian drone and jet incursions into Poland and Estonia, and interference in Moldova, warning Europe not to ignore the threat.

He cautioned that weak international responses are fueling a dangerous global arms race, now driven by artificial intelligence, and called for urgent rules governing its use in warfare. Ukraine, he noted, has had to innovate by developing attack and sea drones to repel Russian forces in the Black Sea and strike military targets.

“Stopping this war now is cheaper than preparing for a nuclear-armed drone in the future,” he warned, urging collective action to halt Russia’s aggression. Over 40 countries are already part of Ukraine’s coalition, but Zelenskyy pressed for wider support.

“Don’t remain silent while Russia drags this war on,” he urged. “Speak out, condemn it, and join us in defending life, international law, and order. The world is waiting for action.”
