A 42-year-old man in the U.S. has been charged with murder after an 11-year-old boy in Houston was fatally shot during a “ding dong ditch” prank on Saturday. The case is the latest deadly incident tied to a TikTok-driven trend that has already cost several children their lives.
Court records in Harris County show that Leon Gonzalo Jr. was booked into jail Tuesday morning. His home address corresponds to the location where the child was shot while fleeing after ringing the doorbell, according to witnesses.
Police reported that the boy had been ringing doorbells in the neighborhood and running away. One witness confirmed he was sprinting from a house just before being hit by gunfire. Houston police homicide Sgt. Michael Cass stressed that the shooting did not appear to be an act of self-defense, noting that it occurred some distance away from the residence, CNN affiliate KHOU reported.
The prank—commonly known as “ding dong ditching,” where someone rings a doorbell and runs—has resurfaced as a viral challenge on TikTok, with many clips showing participants aggressively banging or even kicking on front doors.
