CBN Warns Nigerians Over Rising Cyberattack Threats and Fake Messages

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has alerted the public to a rise in cyberattack attempts aimed at Nigerians’ personal accounts through fake messages and emails posing as official communication from the bank.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, the apex bank explained that cybercriminals are using misleading tactics to deceive individuals and gain access to sensitive personal information.

The CBN noted that these fraudulent messages—circulating via email and various online platforms—often encourage recipients to click on suspicious links. They also include false claims about the bank’s leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions in order to appear legitimate and trick victims.

The bank emphasized that its only official website is www.cbn.gov.ng and warned the public against clicking unknown links or sharing personal details on unverified websites.

It further advised Nigerians to confirm any information claiming to be from the CBN through its official website or credible media sources, and to report suspicious communications to law enforcement agencies for investigation.

Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding the financial system, the CBN stated that it is enhancing its cybersecurity measures in collaboration with relevant authorities to better protect citizens from online fraud.

This warning follows recent cybersecurity incidents involving key institutions. On April 15, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) disclosed a cyberattack on its systems, while the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) earlier announced a probe into a suspected data breach involving Remita Payment Services Ltd., Sterling Bank, and other organisations.

Authorities say these developments underscore the growing need for vigilance as cyber threats continue to evolve across Nigeria’s financial and digital landscape.
