Uber has announced that it will discontinue its ride-hailing services in Nigeria following a review of its business operations. The company said its Nigerian operations will officially come to an end on September 2, 2026.
In a message sent to drivers on Wednesday, Uber informed them that, from the effective date, they would no longer receive requests for passenger trips through the Uber app.
The company described the decision as a difficult one and expressed its appreciation to drivers who had contributed to its operations in Nigeria over the years.
Uber acknowledged the important role its drivers had played in providing transportation services, noting that their dedication had helped residents travel safely and affordably.
The company also reflected on the impact of its platform in Nigeria, describing Uber as a technology platform that connected passengers with independent drivers and facilitated access to transportation services.
However, Uber did not provide specific reasons for its decision to withdraw from the Nigerian market in the notice issued to drivers.
The company said its Help Centre would remain available until September 24, 2026, to respond to questions and provide assistance to drivers regarding the shutdown.
The decision marks the end of Uber's presence in Nigeria and represents a significant development in the country's rapidly evolving ride-hailing industry. App-based transportation services have become an important component of urban mobility in major Nigerian cities, making Uber's exit a notable change for both drivers and passengers.
Uber concluded its message by thanking its drivers for being part of the company's community and for their contribution to its operations in Nigeria.
