The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi over his recent statement, “I’m hungry.”
During a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike claimed that Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, is actually hungry for political power rather than food, contradicting Amaechi’s assertion.
Amaechi had made the remark during his 60th birthday event last week, commenting on Nigeria’s economic situation by saying, “We’re all hungry, all of us are. If you’re not hungry, I am. For us, the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him.” He also criticized Nigerian politicians for lacking capitalist ideas and instead focusing on sharing power.
In response, Wike dismissed Amaechi’s comment as misleading and ill-timed, questioning why he would choose his birthday to make such a statement. He highlighted Amaechi’s long political career — as Speaker (1999-2007), Governor (2007-2015), and Minister (2015-2023) — during which he never raised concerns about hunger.
Wike argued that Amaechi and his allies are regrouping due to a hunger for power, not food, and accused him of failing politically. He also criticized Amaechi’s poor performance in election campaigns and suggested that Amaechi’s use of the word “removal” hints at undemocratic means like a military coup.
Wike emphasized his own role as an asset to President Tinubu’s administration and rejected any notion that he is a liability.
Both Wike and Amaechi served as governors of Rivers State, with Amaechi also holding significant roles such as Minister of Transportation and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum. Prior to being governor, Amaechi was Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and pioneer chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Assemblies.
