Abusive marriage: Lagos records 8,692 domestic violence cases

Between August 2024 and July 2025, Lagos State recorded no fewer than 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual violence.

The disclosure was made on Friday by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), during a media parley marking Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, observed every September.

According to Pedro, who was represented by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Hameed Oyenuga, domestic violence was the most prevalent issue, accounting for 3,685 cases within the period under review.

He highlighted that victims ranged from an 18-month-old infant to a 79-year-old, emphasizing that abuse affects people across all age groups. Pedro reiterated the state government’s commitment to its zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence.

The attorney general revealed that Lagos secured more than 140 convictions and issued six restraining orders during the year. He further broke down the cases as follows: defilement (243), child abuse and physical assault (244), rape (99), sexual harassment (48), and sexual assault by penetration (25). Other reported incidents included 726 family-related disputes, 41 cases of cyber harassment, and 32 cases of threats to life.

Pedro also noted that 3,090 children exposed to domestic violence received counselling. In addition, 146 survivors benefited from free legal representation, all victims of sexual assault accessed free medical services, and 30 people were sheltered in government facilities.

On rehabilitation, he explained that 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators underwent therapy, while 13 persons with disabilities received specialised support.

He further identified Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Oshodi-Isolo as the local councils with the highest number of adult-related cases, while Ikorodu, Kosofe, Badagry, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo topped the list for child-related cases.
