Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has urged the government to impose stricter controls on social media use in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his X account on Monday, Olayinka proposed that anyone seeking to open or manage a social media account should be required to present their National Identification Number (NIN) along with a recognized government-issued ID, such as an international passport, voter’s card, or driver’s license.

According to him, making these requirements mandatory would help curb misinformation and enhance accountability online. He noted that Nigeria’s NIN system—already linked to banking and telecommunications services—shows how verified digital identities can deter the spread of fake accounts and bots.

Olayinka further emphasized that, since NIN is already compulsory for essential services like phone registration and banking, extending its use to social media platforms would strengthen digital accountability and align with the country’s existing identity verification structure.
