The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two individuals for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping and recovered ₦1.2 million, part of the ransom paid by the family of the supposed victim.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Saturday, identified the suspects as 23-year-old Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu. Investigations revealed that Nmesoma conspired with Chibuike to orchestrate her abduction.
According to police findings, the suspects initially demanded ₦15 million from Nmesoma’s family. Following negotiations, ₦3 million was eventually transferred into her account. Police operatives from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu later arrested the duo and recovered ₦1.2 million of the ransom.
Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu, while condemning the act, described it as evidence of worsening moral decline among youths, stressing that many young people are resorting to crime for selfish gain. He urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to instill discipline, integrity, and sound values in children.
Orutugu also cautioned youths against criminal ventures, warning that the law would eventually catch up with offenders regardless of how carefully they attempt to conceal their crimes.
