Police spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that they were carried out in the Eziowelle, Oba, and Ogidi divisions of the state. He said the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department has already obtained evidence to support the prosecution of the suspects.
According to the statement, on August 19, 2025, operatives in Oba Division arrested one Ihechiluru Okorie for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old girl who had gone to his shop for a haircut. The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime.
Similarly, on August 13, police officers in Eziowelle Division arrested 28-year-old Chidubem Udem for allegedly defiling a five-year-old girl at her grandmother’s house. A medical examination later confirmed the assault.
In another case, on August 28, Ogidi Division operatives apprehended 30-year-old Kalu Ilo for allegedly sexually assaulting his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter, who is mentally challenged, in Nkpor.
Ikenga stated that all three suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned in court on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incidents and pledged that the Command would pursue justice diligently. He also urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain watchful and promptly report any incidents of sexual or gender-based violence, reaffirming the police’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons in Anambra State.
