The UK government has unveiled major new restrictions on overseas hiring, blocking more than 100 job roles from being filled by foreign workers in a bid to reduce net migration.
In a statement posted on X Saturday morning, the Home Office said the measure is aimed at creating more opportunities for British workers while overhauling the visa system.
“Cutting net migration means getting the fundamentals right. Over 100 occupations are now closed to overseas recruitment, opening up more jobs for British workers. A fairer, skills-based system is taking shape,” the Home Office announced.
The move is part of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s broader immigration strategy, following his assumption of office on July 5, 2024, after Labour’s landslide election win that ousted Rishi Sunak.
However, critics warn the new restrictions could deepen labour shortages in sectors such as health, social care, hospitality, logistics, and the creative industries—areas heavily reliant on migrant workers. The Home Office has yet to release the full updated list of barred occupations, according to PUNCH Online.
