Nigeria and the United States have stepped up joint airstrike operations targeting ISIS militants in Borno State.

The Defence Headquarters, working closely with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), has intensified military action against ISIS fighters in North-East Nigeria, carrying out additional successful airstrikes in the Metele area of Borno State.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the airstrikes were launched after intelligence showed that terrorist groups were gathering and relocating in the area, leading to the killing of over 20 ISIS/ISWAP militants.

He added that these operations come after the killing of ISIS leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki on Saturday and are part of ongoing efforts to break up terrorist networks, push them off the battlefield, and prevent them from finding safe areas within Nigeria.

The statement further emphasized that the Nigerian Armed Forces will continue to vigorously defend the country’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, stressing that all terrorists threatening citizens and national stability will be tracked down and defeated. It also reaffirmed that there would be no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria.
